Chapter Nine

Since I sat right behind Logan, our eyes met in the rearview mirror more than once during the ride home. But he never said a word, and I got no vibe at all from him. We dropped off his mom, gently refusing her invitation to come inside for a bit. Logan said he wanted to get to Sam's before full darkness set in so he could take a look around. I just wanted to put on some sweats, a hand-me-down football jersey, and thick socks.

We got to the house around nine. Logan grabbed a flashlight from the glove box and quickly walked all around, with me struggling to keep up. Everything looked okay, so we went inside. I picked up my bag, which I'd left by the door, and walked down the short hall to look at the two bedrooms. Since one appeared more lived-in than the other, I assumed it was Sam's and went for the second, which actually had a more feminine feel. I credited the soft mauves and pale greens in the bedspread and curtains for that.

Just as I set my bag on the bed, I sensed Logan behind me. "You can have the guy room down the hall."

He didn't answer. Glancing over my shoulder, I saw he wasn't even there. Probably already in Sam's room, I thought, but he wasn't there, either. I heard the back door open and retraced my steps to find Logan coming indoors from the deck.

"What are you doing?"

"Scraping mud off my shoes."

My heart skipped a beat. "How long have you been outside?"

"A minute or two. Why?"

"Nothing. I, um, put myself in the guestroom. You can have Sam's bed."

"Thanks."

Leaving him to settle in, I walked to the living room and scanned the remaining bookshelves, part of my concentration still in Sam's guestroom. I'd been so sure Logan stood right behind me. I'd felt his presence that strongly.

Wait… His presence? Or a presence?

To be honest, I wasn't sure. That left me a little nervous and more than glad that Logan had volunteered to stay at the house with me. If anything weird was going to go down tonight, I definitely wanted him around.

We worked until ten-thirty, packing the last of the books and moving on to the stuff hanging on Sam's walls--paintings, photographs, awards. My admiration for him grew, as did my sorrow that his life had taken such a miserable turn. So did my sympathy for Logan, who worked like an automaton. Clearly his mood had tanked the moment we tossed the last book in the box. I understood why. I shared his defeat.

Exhausted, Logan and I headed to our separate beds. I fell asleep moments after my head hit the pillow. I think the patter of sleet on the window helped. Deliciously warm under a pile of quilts that looked handmade, I felt cozy and safe.

I don't know how long I slept before I startled wide awake. Sometimes scary dreams did that to me, but if I'd had one tonight, all remnants had vanished the moment I opened my eyes.
